Mr Piccoli said he had received feedback from residents in Ardlethan, as well as the wider surrounding areas.
“I am certainly not against development and job creation across the area, but this proposal is not something I will be supporting,” Mr Piccoli said.
“The overwhelming feedback that I have received from the Griffith (and Leeton) community in particular is that this proposal brings with it risks that are unacceptable.
“Contamination of the soil and ground water supplies are at the forefront of the concerns.
“The proposal is currently listed as a major project by the Department of Planning. It is currently in its infancy. There is no call for public submissions at this point.
“However, I have detailed my concerns to the Minister for Planning and have also passed on the concerns that have come to my office in writing and will continue to do so.”
The owner of the mine has acknowledged there are community concerns over plans to transform the mine into a rubbish dumping site.
Ardlethan resident Renee Doyle has refuted claims the Riverina town was “largely supportive” of the proposal.
Groups such as the Riverina Wine Grapes Marketing Board have also flagged grave concerns the proposal could impact agricultural production in the region.
