Played at Yanco Sportsground, the Hawks were able to fight off the persistent Sharks to take the win 28-26.
Yanco-Wamoon was down by 16 points at half-time, but were able to claw their way back into the match with a more consistent second half.
Coach Simon Watson was relieved to get the win, making it his side’s fourth for the season.
“We had to really work hard to make our way back into it,” he said.
“It was 20-4 at half-time.
“We needed to pull off something special to get the win and that’s exactly what we did.
“It was one of the best halves of footy I’ve seen our blokes play this year.”
Watson said his players may have been thinking the Sharks were going to be an easier opposition than they were.
“We knew they had a few injuries and they haven’t been going as well as they have in the last couple of years,” he said.
“Some of the guys were probably thinking it was just going to be handed to them, but that wasn’t the case.
“TLU came out hard and had us on the backfoot in the first half, which is not a position we like to be in.
“When they get ‘Pikey’ (Brent Pike) and ‘Jado’ (Jaden Kelly) back into the team they’ll be even better.”
Watson said to his side’s credit they came through with the goods.
“Our talk got better in defence and we started to spread the ball a bit more,” he said.
“All of that was non-existent in the first half.
“It was a pretty good turnaround. At the end of the game I was pleased we were able to get the win.
“To be down 20-4 at half-time is quite a big gap, so to come back from that was a real credit to the boys.
“They played a lot better in that second half.”
The win means the Hawks are now sitting fifth on the Group 20 ladder.
This weekend Yanco-Wamoon will enjoy a week off with the bye.
Watson will allow his players to enjoy the break before stepping up preparations for the Yenda game in two weeks time.
“We won’t be training on Friday this week,” Watson said.
“I’ll give the guys the week off and we’ll be back into it next week.
“I usually find when there’s a bye weekend that you don’t get many numbers at the Friday training anyway. We’ll just enjoy the break before getting back into it.”
