The donation will be put towards the farm’s ginning costs this season.
Southern Cotton general manager Kate O’Callaghan said the Whitton-based gin was proud to support the MSCD because of its far-reaching benefits to the Coleambally and Darlington Point communities.
“The demonstration farm is a not-for-profit program that not only gives thousands of dollars back to the community, but supports research and provides a showcase for regional crops,” Ms O’Callaghan said.
“Importantly, this aligns with one of our main objectives – to support research, promote goodwill in local communities and give back to the communities which have supported our business.”
MSCDF chairman Ian Sutherland and Darlington Point APEX Club representatives Chris Sutton, Rohan King and Ben Witham were presented with the $20,000 cheque at a special morning tea last week.
“The MSCDF invests 85 per cent of its profits directly back into the community by providing financial assistance to numerous groups, including service clubs, schools and football clubs,” Mr Sutherland said.
“Since 1996, the MSCDF has donated approximately $1,195,723 into the Murrumbidgee Shire.”
This year, proceeds from the MSCDF will go to the Darlington Point APEX Club.
Club president Chris Sutton extended a warm thank you to all involved.
“On behalf of the APEX Club, I’d like to thank all the community members who continue to donate their time and efforts to the farm, as well as Southern Cotton, who has provided this generous donation,” Mr Sutton said.
Ms O’Callaghan said the cotton ginned extremely well, with the cotton coming out as very white with a low lead content and an outstanding yield at 13 bales per hectare.
Southern Cotton was commissioned and built in the 2012 season.
The Whitton-based operation has state-of-the-art technology and employs 11 full-time staff and 42 seasonal workers.
