While it can be an uncomfortable conversation for many reasons, it is one that needs to be had.
Currently in Australia a family of a deceased person will always be asked to confirm the donation decision of a person before donation for transplantation can proceed.
Families that have discussed and know each other’s donation decisions are much more likely to support organ and tissue donation proceeding.
Only around one per cent of all hospital deaths occur in the specific circumstances where a person can be considered for organ donation, although many more have the potential to become tissue donors.
To optimise every opportunity for potential donation, the time is now to discuss the issue as part of DonateLife Week, which runs until the end of this week.
There’s no time like the present.
As we know life is short, so it is important to have these talks with loved ones.
DonateLife Week is led by the Organ and Tissue Authority as part of the national DonateLife campaign and supported by community events and activities across Australia.
For more information about the week and organ donation itself visit www.donatelife.gov.au.
