Mr Press has been awarded the Silver Kangaroo by the Chief Scout of Australia, His Excellency General, the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove.
The award is for “eminent achievement and exceptional service” that spans close to four decades.
Adult Recognition Awards are presented each year to volunteer leaders and supporters that have given valuable service above and beyond what is normally expected of a person in that position.
Riverina Scouts Region Commissioner Heather Dearing said Mr Press was a credit to the organisation.
“While our leaders don’t devote their time and energy to Scouts for the accolades, it’s wonderful that they can be recognised for the positive impact they have on the lives of so many of our youth members,” she said.
“Greg’s enthusiasm for Scouting, particularly for the Venturer section, is extremely motivating to those he works with – both leaders and youth members.
“At all times, Greg places a high priority on the wellbeing of youth members and ensures all activities are planned for maximum enjoyment, but minimal risk.
“Greg willingly shares his extensive skills and knowledge with other leaders, mentoring new leaders and sharing resources he has developed.”
As a Personal Leader Adviser, Greg devotes much time to helping and encouraging other leaders to develop their skills.
Mr Press is seeking to deliver training to Venturers via digital technology, so the tyranny of distance can be overcome in the region and geographically isolated youth members can participate with others in a broader range of skills development opportunities.
He has been a well-respected member of the state training team for many years.
Ms Dearing said it was an achievement Mr Press should be proud of.
“Greg leads by example,” she said.
“His dedication, hard work and hands on approach in whatever he does motivates others to get involved.
“His sense of fun helps to make even the most menial of tasks enjoyable. His participation in 30 Dragonskin events is inspirational.
“(This is where) teams of Venturer Scouts and Guides gather for the Easter weekend to participate in a variety of activities that allow them to test their initiative, leadership, teamwork and technical skills against each other.”
He will officially receive his award during the annual presentation evening, which will be held in Albury on September 5.
