Council has received a poor response so far to its 2016 Australia Day awards program, despite there being many worthy recipients throughout the shire.
For this reason it has been decided to extend the nomination period in the hope more will be received.
Nominations were due to close on November 27, but it has now been moved to December 7.
Organisers have acknowledged there are many people in the Leeton community that are deserving of a nomination.
Leeton’s Australia Day Committee chairman George Weston believes many people intend to nominate someone, but have just not completed the form yet.
“It just takes one person to complete the nomination form, it’s an easy (process) and it won’t take very long at all,” he said.
“We all know someone who goes above and beyond for their community, group or organisation.
“This is the perfect opportunity to recognise those individuals amongst us.”
Nominations have been called for in the categories of citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, achiever of the year, young achiever of the year and event/group/organisation of the year.
The citizen of the year honour has gone to many well known residents in the past, including Sue Gavel, who remained humble at receiving the award.
An Australia Day Award is an honour to receive. It is a great opportunity to value the successes in our community.

Mrs Gavel said it was important to recognise those within the community that have contributed to the shire.
“An Australia Day Award is an honour to receive,” Mrs Gavel said.
“It is a great opportunity to value the successes in our community.
“There are a number of individuals and groups out there that have achieved throughout the past year.”
Nomination forms are available from council’s offices in Chelmsford Place or its website at www.leeton.nsw.gov.au.
The forms can also be found at Leeton Visitor Information Centre, Yanco Shop, Murrami Post Office and Whitton Post Office.
