Bill Parow, 94, was at his Karri Road home on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday morning when thieves broke into his house and stole from him.
Mr Parow had gotten up during the night to make himself a cup of tea before falling back to sleep in a chair in his lounge room.
Griffith Local Area Command Inspector Scott Wilkinson said he woke again about 2am and returned to his bedroom.
“He has noticed items on the floor and the room looking dishevelled,” Inspector Wilkinson said.
“A number of items were stolen.
“Police were called and investigations are continuing.”
Forensic police examined the scene this week.
However, the situation deteriorated further when less than 24 hours after the incident, Mr Parow suffered a stroke and was rushed to Griffith Base Hospital.
His family and friends have been left outraged by the incident, with Leeton RSL Sub-branch president John Power angered by the incident.
“It’s actually hard to put it into words,” he said.
“I think it’s an absolute disgrace.
“His daughter has told me that the first thing he asked (after the robbery) was ‘they didn’t take my medals did they’?
“I think it’s unbelievable.
“Who would do this?”
Mr Power said it was unthinkable something like this could happen in Leeton.
“It’s frightening and it shouldn’t happen,” he said.
“Bill is one of nature’s gentleman.
“A nicer man you couldn’t find.
“All we can do now as an RSL Sub-branch is support him and his family as best we can.”
Police have called on the community called to provide any information they may have about the incident by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Leeton police on 6953 1399.
