Leeton Shire Council held a workshop last week for its volunteers to ensure they know some of the basic factors and triggers of those with mental health problems. 

Dozens of volunteers from council’s many programs, including Meals on Wheels, Community Transport and more turned out for the event to learn just how important it was to also be taking care of themselves. 

The day was hosted by Schizophrenia Fellowship of NSW regional manager Michele Saffery, who left the volunteers with a feeling of accomplishment and the right tools to use when it comes to issues of mental health and how to address them. 

The workshop also focused on how volunteers could identify any struggles their clients might be having.

These council volunteers are the regular points of contact for many senior residents living throughout the shire.

Council’s acting community services manager Nateaka Blake was pleased with the response at the event. 

“Our volunteers are at the forefront of services delivery in the Leeton and surrounding communities,” she said.

“It is vital that our volunteers are well informed and assisted within their roles.

“Mental health affects many people within our communities and, at times, it can become a significant barrier to social connectedness.

“In some instances, our Meals on Wheels and community transport volunteers are the only social interactions that occur on a regular basis.”

Ms Blake said feedback from the workshop had been positive. 

(The) mental health workshop will provide the volunteers the necessary tools to support those affected by mental health,” she said.

“If our volunteers are able to recognise and offer assistance to people affected by mental health issues, we are in essence creating a more inclusive and respective community service.
