The top-of-the-table clash between the Narrandera Carpheads and Yanco Hotel saw both teams struggle with bat in hand.
At the half-way point in the match it’s well and truly anybody’s game as first innings points are still up for grabs come the second week of play.
Hotel won the toss and decided to have a bat first.
It was slow going right from the start.
Rhyan Carter was sent packing for a second ball duck before David Tiffin found himself short of the crease when he was run out for two.
This left Hotel 2-15.
The situation didn’t improve from there on out.
They lost Hugh Collins (1) a few runs later and Nathan Lanham (5) shortly after that.
Mark Doyle (28) was the sole Hotel player to look steady at the crease.
Amidst the carnage that was happening at the other end he continued to tick over the runs.
When Carpheads’ Lachie Jess struck for a third time in the match, Hotel were in a dire position at 5-36.
Rohan Rehwinkel was brought into the attack and things continued to go the Carpheads’ way.
They lost captain Dionisio Pantano for two before Jameson Booth was sent packing for a golden duck.
Now 7-48, their only hope of salvaging a score was in the hands of Doyle.
Unfortunately for Hotel, he too fell of the bowling of Rehwinkel.
Hayden Emerson (4) and Josh Lanham (5 not out) were able to hang around and chew up some overs, but the runs just didn’t come.
Hotel were bowled out for 69 after 37 overs.
Rehwinkel (3-13) and Jess (3-19) were the best of the bowlers.
Chasing only a mediocre score, the Carpheads would’ve liked to get off to a good start.
They only managed t get to 12 before Pantano struck.
He trapped Tom Robinson (1) in front and claimed Brent Lawrence (0) three balls later.
Rhys Wilesmith chipped in with one of his own to leave the Carpheads 3-18.
The duo of Pantano and Wilesmith continued to chip away and reduced the Carpheads to 5-24.
When Pantano claimed the Carpheads’ skipper for four, the match was well and truly alive at 6-31.
James Sullivan (17 not out) and Kurt Jensen (14) knuckled down and got the Carpheads within striking distance of the total.
Jensen fell after the pair had amassed 26 and the loss of another wicket just before the close of play had them 8-57.
The Carpheads finished out the day at 8-61, still nine runs short of victory.
