IT HAS been 10 years since smoke alarms in homes became compulsory, with Leeton Fire and Rescue NSW Graham Parks certain they have played a role in saving homes and lives in that time.

It was 10 years on May 1 that legislation was introduced that required every building where people sleep to have a minimum of one smoke alarm.
Captain Parks said in that time the simple device had saved many from potential heartache and trauma.
“They definitely do work … here (in Leeton) we’ve certainly seen many properties be saved because of working smoke alarms,” he said.
“If people did install smoke alarms 10 years ago now would also be a good time to buy a new one as those older-style ones usually only have a 10-year life span.
“It’s also a good time for people to check their batteries and make sure their smoke alarms and working correctly.
“They definitely can help to save lives and homes.
“It’s been very important (to have this legislation in place.”
