INTERSTATE drivers Tim Atkin and Callum Harper emerged as the headlining winners in what was a big night of racing for the Leeton Motor Sports Club’s 40th Anniversary last weekend.

In front a record Brobenah Raceway crowd of 3500, the Queensland-based Atkin was able to successfully defend his NSW Title in the Production Sedans, while Tasmanian Harper, who is the current Australian Champion, managed to go one place better to take out the Long Track Classic for Super Sedans.
After starting from the outside of the front row in the 30-lap NSW Title deciding feature race, Atkin, from Gympie in country Queensland, was locked in a hotly-contested battle for the lead with Leeton’s Wayne Bourke.
The pair traded the race lead on numerous occasions, but in the end, Atkin showed his class and came away with a hard-fought win.
A gallant Bourke came home in second, while the podium was completed by another Leeton resident in Justin Hawkins.
The remainder of the finishers were completed with Dehne Sparrow (Victoria), Adam Wilson (SA), Mark Jennings (SA), Nathan Hawkins, Matt Croker, Mick O’Hara and the final finisher Darren Snowden.
The hard-luck stories of the feature race was pole sitter and Leeton club member Danny Harrison, as well as veteran Stephen Laidlaw (Victoria).
Harrison set the pace for the one-third of the feature race in impressive fashion, but engine woes denied him of the win.
Laidlaw was another front-runner to be struck down by mechanical dramas that saw him retire on lap 11.
In the Super Sedans action Harper, who finished second behind Victorian Lucas Roberts in last season’s event, was able to put on a masterclass throughout the 25-lap feature race after qualifying on pole position and went on to claim a comfortable win.
The night was marred by a nasty crash from south coast-based racer Daryl Moon that resulted in him being transported to hospital.
Moon crashed into the inside tyre in turn two on the opening lap of his opening heat race.
The support classes had the feature-race wins claimed by Leeton club member Mitch Watts (Goulburn Ovens Sedans) and Rhys Collins (Sports Sedans).
One of the many highlights from the night was when long-time club member Wayne Aylett was presented with life membership honours.
