Lee John McCarthy, 37, from Leeton, was formally refused bail in Deniliquin Local Court on Monday.
McCarthy was arrested by officers from Griffith Local Area Command after two men allegedly smashed a window and assaulted a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman with a blunt weapon about 2.30pm on June 4.
The victims were asleep inside the Gossamer Street home at the time of the attack and they knew the attackers, according to Chief Inspector John Wadsworth from Griffith police.
The assailants fled the scene and the man and woman were taken to Leeton Hospital with serious injuries.
McCarthy was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated break and enter with intent to commit a serious indictable offence and reckless wounding.
The case was adjourned and McCarthy will appear for mention in Griffith Local Court on August 10.
Leeton neighbourhood watch chairman Mark Norvall told The Irrigator the group would host free self defence classes for women.
