AT A time when we have an American presidential hopeful commenting that Muslims need to be shut out of the United States among other things, there is no better way to close down these thoughts than by each individual displaying tolerance.

For those that aren’t aware, the person is question is Donald Trump, but with all of his outlandish statements, let’s just move on from him and discuss the issue at hand.
Sunday marks the beginning of Refugee Week in Australia.
For those that aren’t sure what this is all about, the week is used to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrating the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.
Too often the issue of refugees is politicised, causing angst and concern for not just those coming to Australia, but Australians in general.
What everyone needs to agree on is the humanity of it all.
Forget about what the politicians are saying and focus on the individual.
By individual I mean those refugees that live and work in Leeton shire, contributing to society in just the way everyone else does.
Refugees are people too and deserve to be treated as such.
Too often refugees are associated with matters both here and abroad that have nothing to do with them.
Terrorism is the biggest one that comes to mind.
What everyone needs to remember is stereotypes are rubbish and should be left at the door.
Australians were once known for being a tolerant and welcoming society.
Getting back to this is a must because if we don’t, the refugee crisis globally is only going to worsen.
Of course there are so many issues associated with refugees, but at the heart of it all is humanity.
What we can do is focus on our own backyards in Leeton.
There are many refugees living in our shire and thanks to the Leeton Multicultural Support Group they are getting the assistance they need to start their lives here in a positive way.
These people want to be involved with the community just like any one else.
They want to play sport, get involved with charities and generally just get to know other residents. It’s all about giving everyone a chance ad showing simple human kindness.
