The group operates more than just practice sessions for its athletes and conducts open skate sessions and lessons to help promote fitness and exercise to anyone willing to lace up a pair of skates.
Currently sharing the Leeton Soldiers Club auditorium for their practice and open skate sessions, the group hopes to find a space more suitable to their needs and have reached out to the Leeton community for help.
Leeton Roller Derby’s Linda Newman said they urgently needed to find a more permanent location.
“We’re limited for space at the Soldiers Club,” Newman said.
“They have been great and it’s starting to really take off.
“We are getting more and more kids turning up every week.”
The group isn’t just for adults, with children welcome to take part.
More recently they have been involved in skills sessions and games under the close direction of the roller derby members.
Promoting fitness is just one of the goals of the open skate sessions, with fun being the main attraction.
The group hope to find someone with available space in a shed or warehouse with a polished concrete surface.
Dimensions for a regulation roller derby rink are about 23 meters wide by 33 meters long, but the group can work with less.
At the recent open skate session in the Soldiers Club the Leeton Roller Derby organisation hosted 15 children and three adults who were learning to skate.
They hope to continue to be able to engage with more people and inspire them to put on a pair of skates, get some exercise while having fun.
The open skate sessions were open to kids and adults of all ages and the group encouraged anyone interested to check out their Facebook page.
However, without a place to call home, the Leeton Roller Derby will be unable to continue hosting free skate sessions and offering lessons for kids and adults.
“We’re just putting a call out,” Newman said.
“If a venue does arise we’re willing to help clean, pay rent and maintain it.
“We just want somewhere to skate.”
