The church had been due to close and sold following a final service at the beginning of the month, but Bishop Rob decided to keep it open after community feedback.
It was also discovered funds had been left in a former parishioner’s will for the maintenance of the church.
However, the issue at hand is how residents would like to use the church. It is still able to be used for weddings, funerals and baptisms, but Father Robert Murphy said he needed to know if residents would still like the church to be used for regular mass.
“The problem is we don’t have a congregation.” he said.
“It’s a bit like a hospital with no patients. We need to know what people want to do now that Bishop Rob has thrown the church a lifeline.
“We’re happy to provide a (regular) mass for all denominations, I just need to hear from people what they want.” St John’s the only church in Whitton after the closure of its Catholic counterpart.
