The first half started off slowly for both sides as they battled for possession and position on the field as neither side made any substantial progress.
Within the first 10 minutes of the game, each side had scored and converted.
Half-time loomed ahead and the score was still tied at six-all when, in the final minutes of the half, the Greens broke through with two tries to push the lead to 18-6 before the horn rang out.
“The boys stuck to their structure in the first half,” Greens coach Brent Pike said.
“We planned on sticking to our patterns and put them away late in the game.
“It was good that we stuck to our pattern and put points on at the end of the half.”
As each side took pause to assess their strategy, fans huddled in the cold as they eagerly awaited the start of the second half.
The Greens were ready and launched into the second half ready to tear through anything in their way.
“We stuck to our structures and the intensity was there,” Pike said. Hay on the other hand, had ran out of steam and their side’s only points in the game had already been registered.
“They only scored one try in the first (half) and in the second (half) we kept them scoreless,” Pike said. “It was a good effort.”
“A good effort” would prove to be an understatement as the Greens proceeded to score try after try. Hay was completely unable to slow their momentum.
The Magpies did get lucky several times by being able to come up with the occasional loose ball, but were powerless to do anything substantial with it.
“I just thought that if we stuck with our pattern we would be able to put plenty of points on at the back of each half,” Pike said.
The final try of the game was run in by Danny Maskill, his third for the day. This brought his total to six for the season.
Also contributing to the win were Rhys Wilesmith and Matt Arnold.
“It was a good all-around team effort,” Pike said.
It was yet another win in what is proving to be an impressive season for the Greens. Hay hadn’t played in several weeks and Pike was hoping for a win, but wasn’t expecting it to be by 42 points.
Fortunately the side made it through unscathed and are expected to meet the Sharks at full strength.
