Nominations open on Monday, with council director of corporate services Duncan McWhirter hopeful residents of all backgrounds and cultures nominate.
“The lack of diversity in elected representatives has been a long-term issue right across NSW,” he said. “By promoting diversity councils such as Leeton can ensure better representation and better decision-making.”
General manager Jackie Kruger agreed and added women make up just over half of the population, but only around a quarter (27 per cent) of councillors in NSW are women.
“This means in many communities, including Leeton, the voices of women are missing from important debate and decision-making that affects all of our lives,” she said.
Nominations can be made at council from Monday until August 10. The election will be held on September 10, with pre-poll options to be available.
