Those are the words of George Weston, who is the chairman of the new Leeton Central Business District Committee that has been formed to discuss revamping the town’s CBD area.
“The street isn’t dead, so it doesn’t need revitalising as such, just more of a revamp or improvements in different areas,” Mr Weston said.
The committee held its first meeting last week after being formed on the back of funding made available from the state government.
Leeton Shire Council was successful in obtaining a $25,000 grant from the government that will be used by the group to develop concept plans as a resource to assist with enhancement projects in the CBD.
The first meeting was attending by various stakeholders, including councillors, the Leeton Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Leeton Tidy Towns, a heritage adviser and more.
Mr Weston said community feedback and input would also be sought.
“We definitely will be seeking input from residents, but we need to have something to take them first as well,” he said.
“There’s talk of doing a pop up shop and we’ll hopefully have a stand at the Farmers Markets too. It’s important to hear from people what they think we should be doing.”
Ideas already being “thrown around” include improving footpaths and awnings in the CBD, ways to make the laneway between the chemist and bank more attractive and possibly creating a similar style to Jarrah Mall in Maple Street.
Mr Weston said none of those ideas were set in stone.
“They are just ideas and I’m sure we will have plenty more come our way before it’s determined what we will be doing,” he said.
“I think our main street looks pretty good, but there are improvements we can do to make it better. Council is always receiving plenty of comments about how great our main street and the town looks.”
Residents can now also visit council’s Have Your Say website and leave their ideas for review by the committee. Regular updates will be provided regarding the group’s progress.
