The book parade, an annual tradition started over ten years ago, engages the entire school and staff as they dress up as their favourite literature characters.
“We promote a short list of books that we put in the library for a couple of weeks before hand,” said Michelle Naimo, teacher at St Joseph’s.
“Classes will come in, have a good look at them and do some activities around the books, it’s wonderful.”
In our face paced, technologically advanced world, the book parade encourages children to find a quiet place and get lost in the pages of a good book far from the screens and the game controllers.
“I think in spite of the opportunities of technology, kids just love sitting down with a book.”
The procession was set to Australian music and children happily marched and danced around in front of their cheering classmates to the tunes of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ and ‘Home Among the Gum Trees’.
Characters from all corners were represented, including a Green Sheep and Terri and Bindi Irwin.
Going class by class, each student has the opportunity to shine, but the underlying message is encouraging children to talk about their favourite books with others and expanding their knowledge.
