In Leeton shire this year there are an astounding number of teams that have made the finals series for their respective sports.
On the weekend just gone dozens upon dozens of young players took to the field in both junior rugby league and junior Australian rules football.
While some came home winners and others didn’t, there was more than just a premiership at stake, particularly for the young players.
Sport plays such a big part in communities such as Leeton shire.
For young people, it teaches them how to be part of a team, respect and how to win and how to lose.
Sportsmanship is a vital skill to learn at a young age.
It’s something that is carried over into school life and later the work environment.
Simple courtesy is bestowed at the end of each sporting match and it’s important this politeness is taken by these young players into every other facet of their life.
Young players and their future can be shaped on a sporting field.
For some this may mean playing at an elite level, but for others it may simply be the behavioural skills they learn, such as being part of a team, that they carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Leeton shire is home to many great sporting teams and always has been.
This year there are many sides still playing in the Group 20 and Riverina Football and Netball League competitions.
Each of these teams know what they are playing for and have worked hard throughout the year in order to achieve that grand final glory. The exciting thing about it is the idea that sport has the ability to bring the whole community together.
Leeton’s women’s sevens team has already brought home the premiership this year and there’s no doubting the entire shire was behind them.
The same will be said for the remaining teams battling it out for that sacred grand final spot.
It’s an exciting thing to win a grand final. This is why it’s always so great to see the shire as a whole come together to support their colours.
Win, lose or draw sport will always have that unifying factor and it’s even better at a local level.
