The Leeton Italian Catholic Committee hosted its salami night on Saturday, which has now become an annual event.
About 200 people turned out for the event, arriving with empty stomachs and leaving with a belly full of delicious and traditional Italian food.
Not only were tasty meals served up, but the highlight of the evening was the salami competition, which was taken out by Mick Hannon from Narrandera.
“Interestingly our winner and our second place were ‘non-Italians’,” committee president Dom Amato said.
“This year we had 39 entries, which was about four more than last year I think.
“The quality of all the salami was fantastic.
“There were all kinds of different varieties.
“I think the judges had a pretty tough time deciding on the winner.”
Last year was the first time the committee decided to put on the event, but after a successful evening, it was a given another would be held in 2016.
Mr Amato said it would likely be held again next year.
He said the feedback from attendees was nothing but positive.
“Everyone seemed to have a really great night, which was what it was all about,” Mr Amato said.
“Everything went to plan and everyone was happy.
“It was great to have people come out and support us again.”
Money raised will be spent within the St Joseph’s Catholic parish, with the committee already working on ideas on how that can happen.
Mr Amato said apart from the salami competition, the star of the evening was the Italian food.
“We had everything you can think of and more,” he said.
“There was goat, pigs on a spit, pasta, salads, zucchini slice, traditional potato dishes, dessert and more.
“People definitely didn’t go hungry.
“I would say they got their money’s worth.
“Some were going back for seconds and thirds.
“I think people were enjoying the company and the entertainment.
“It’s a community event, so that’s what it’s all about.”
The committee will now turn its attention to its next event, which is well known both within the church and the wider community.
“We’ll have our Festa Della Madonna (church service) and event in December,” Mr Amato said. “It is always very well supported.
“That’s what we will start planning for now.” The Italian Catholic Committee would also welcome more members to ensure its continual operation into the future.
