Leeton shire resident John Warren has started a fundraising page for the family after their 22-year-old son, Sam Hehir, died in the house fire on Almond Road.
Not only did they lose a precious family member, but also all of their belongings and possessions.
Leeton Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the scene along with the Rural Fire Service at 6am on Thursday.
On arrival at the scene, crews found the home well alight and the man’s father trying to get in to save his son.
They quickly doused the flames, but it was too late to save the young man’s life.
A crime scene has been established and forensic officers have scoured the scene.
Police believe the fire was not suspicious.
A report is being prepared for the coroner.
Inspector John Wadsworth from Griffith Local Area Command said the incident was a tragic reminder of the importance of fire safety.
On Saturday Mr Warren decided to start the Go Fund Me page as a way for residents to help.
“I don’t know the family personally, but wanted to help,” Mr Warren said.
“I have spoken to a friend of the family and they’ve lost everything. It’s an absolutely horrible situation.”
The page will aim to raise $10,000 for the family, but it is hoped more will be raised. On Monday, the amount raised had already reached close to $6400.
Residents have also been leaving their messages of sympathy on the page. One of those was Heidi Kippola, an exchange student from Finland, who knew Mr Hehir.
“Sam made me very feel welcome to new home and group of friends who lived there ... I have only warm and nice memories of Sam,” she said.
