Leeton police were called to a rural residential property at Merungle Hill about 5.45pm on Saturday.
Neighbours had been the urgent phone calls to police after hearing an argument and the sound of gun shots being fired.
Griffith Local Area Command Inspector Kim Traynor said no one was injured as a result of the argument or the gun shots.
It is believed the .410 gauge shotgun was pointed at the ground when the trigger was pulled.
“Upon arrival (at the property) police spoke with a male resident,” Inspector Traynor said.
“(He) confirmed that he had been involved in an argument with another male resident.
“A short time later a 53-year-old male attended the location where police were and was placed under arrest.”
A search of the property located the .410 gauge shotgun and ammunition.
The 53-year-old was taken to Leeton police station and charged with possessing an unregistered prohibited firearm, not keeping a firearm safely and possessing ammunition without authority.
He was refused bail and will appear in Griffith Local Court on Wednesday.
Earlier that day police had also been called to a property at Stanbridge following reports of a car theft.
Sometime between 1pm and 2pm, the offender, who remains at large, gained entry to a property on Carver Road. Police said a number of rooms were disturbed as a result and the offender stole a set of car keys.
“A Mitsubishi Pajero, which was parked at the side of the home, was then stolen,” Inspector Traynor said. “(However), the vehicle was located about 3pm (that afternoon) on Yates Road in Leeton.”
The theft followed a similar incident in Parkview last week where a home in Park Avenue was the subject of a break and enter sometime between 4.30pm Wednesday and early Thursday morning.
The offender gained entry to the home and rummaged through property inside before coming across a set of keys for a silver Holden sedan.
“This person has then fled the scene in that stolen vehicle,” Inspector John Wadsworth from Griffith Local Area Command said. Forensic officers attended the scene and investigations are ongoing.
