Known as “Santa Paws” residents were able to bring their pets for a snap with Santa Claus while at the same time raising funds to aid wildlife rescue and rehabilitation. Many residents turned out for the festive fun, with many opting for a family photo with Santa in the process.
While the aim of the day was fun and frivolity, the serious side to the event also shone through. Each year hundreds of thousands of animals are hit by cars on Australian roads and caring for injured wildlife is a daunting process.
It was with that fact in mind that the organisers of the Santa Paws event decided to give back by donating to WIRES, an Australian wildlife rescue organisation.
Knowing many rescue centres were affected by the flooding over the winter, Leeton’s Mivet practice manager Sophie Morton was happy to lend a hand as part of Santa Paws to help raise funds to replace damaged materials.
“A lot of the animal bedding got ruined,” Mrs Morton said.
“All that stuff needs to be replaced.” With the holidays just around the corner, traffic is expected to increase. Drivers are urged to stay alert and keep a keen eye out for wildlife.
In the meantime, residents will be able to have that special Christmas family photo on the mantelpiece this year thanks to a successful Santa Paws event. If a collision with an animal does occur drivers should check on the animal and if it is in need of care contact WIRES to request a rescue.
