You get to meet so many different people and tell their story to the community.
Last week many residents would have read an article on Leeton’s Sue and John Gavel that outlined their volunteer efforts that have spanned many years.
It is stories like these that are fun to tell, but there is a serious message.
The Gavels have long been involved in many sporting organisations, charities and community groups.
Their contribution has been amazing, overwhelming and something that one day may be hard to replace.
While the pair are still heavily involved in many organisations they have pulled back their responsibilities in recent years to enjoy different pursuits and spending time with their grandchildren.
What does this all mean?
It means community members, particularly younger residents, need to start thinking about how they can help out.
Leeton shire has dozens upon dozens of community groups and charities.
Talk to anyone on those committees and they will tell you that extra hands and help is always needed.
Some of these groups have had the same executive or leader at the helm for many years.
While that may suit them at some point, it does becomes someone else’s responsibility or turn to help out.
There is no doubt being involved in some of these groups can take up time, but surely the sense of achievement and knowing a difference has been made makes it all worthwhile?
Leeton has a long tradition of community groups helping out when the chips are down, but a lot of these organisations do have members that cross over.
There are residents involved in more than just committee and that no doubt takes a toll at some stage.
Life today is busier than ever, especially if you have a family.
However, these groups need young people to help continue to make them thrive and the community too.
It would be such a shame if any of Leeton shire’s groups were disbanded due to a lack of volunteers. So, before it gets to that stage, perhaps have a think about what you can do before it gets to a more serious stage.
