In its 21st year, Light Up Leeton has again been deemed a success by organisers.
Residents began arriving in Mountford Park for the event about an hour early for the celebrations as they in eagerly anticipated the evening’s festivities.
They carefully selected the prime spots and picnic blankets and chairs started to spring up.
Stallholders representing a number of different organizations set up shop and offered a wide variety of foods, snacks and drinks to the hungry crowd.
The evening started with clouds that threatened rain, but fortunately only produced a few drops that failed to dampen anyone’s spirits, that is if anyone even noticed.
Light Up Leeton offers the opportunity to come together as a community, to spend time with friends and the chance to make new ones.
Committee organizers selflessly gave their time and effort to facilitate an evening designed to mark the start of the festive season and make memories that last a lifetime.
Committee president Carl King was pleased to see the event continued to grow as a result of the efforts of the committee and community members.
“The crowd is up again this year,” Mr King said.
“This is the furthest (in the park) I’ve seen chairs back.
“We’ve had good sponsorship, we have a few extra stalls over last year and good support from the community.” Light Up Leeton was launched 21 years ago from the back of a trailer and in the middle of a thunderstorm.
In the years since it has grown into an event that fills Mountford Park with people, the sounds of music and children’s laughter freely flows to every corner of the park.
“It’s great to see all the community spirit that Light Up Leeton generates,” Mr King said.
Children from across the shire look forward to Light Up Leeton.
For many, it gives them the chance to perform in front of their community while for others it presents a fun evening in the park with friends and family and enjoying the great show.
Allison Moller, a student at Leeton High School, was looking forward to watching this year’s show.
“I’m excited to be here,” she said.
“I’ve been multiple times and have been looking forward to it.”
As the show has continued to grow over the past 21 years thanks to the many volunteers and helpers, Mr King said the committee still extended an invitation to anyone interested in getting involved.
“It’s never too late and it’s never too early,” Mr King said.
