LAST week the Sydney Morning Herald ran an article on divorce rates declining and more marriages being successful.

This claim was backed up by statistics a few years old, but was also based on the idea that marriages today are more successful because Australians are getting married later in life.
It’s an interesting concept.
Sure, many marriages certainly work when couples get married at a younger age.
However, there are many obvious challenges that do arise for those that get married.
Sometimes one half of a couple can grow resentful because after a year two they feel they are “missing out”.
They see their friends, who are the same age, out having fun with their friends, travelling the world and generally not having a care in the world.
Again, it should be stressed this isn’t universal.
Many young couples lead the way and stay married until the day they die.
However, there is an interesting element to the fact many Australians are waiting until later in life to get married.
For many, they’ve seen the world, experienced the single life in all of its glory (and not so glorious sides) and they are ready to settle down.
The older you get, the more you seem to know about yourself and what you want.
Of course, marriage at any age is a serious commitment.
It’s not something anyone should rush into – no matter what age they are.
One television channel over the weekend interviewed a couple that has been married for 70 years.
Yes, you read that right, 70 years.
Now that’s obviously a marriage that started out early and is still going strong.
There will always be dozens of reports saying one thing or another about marriage.
Every couple is different and marriage will either work for them or it won’t.
The other issue that shouldn’t be ignored when talking about marriage is same-sex marriage. Some won’t agree with this, but Australia should be getting its act together on this issue.
As a nation, Australia is lagging behind so many others when it comes to same-sex marriage. There shouldn’t be anything deemed to be wrong about that when there’s so many other horrible things the world should be concerned about.
