Hamish, 11, was gifted 12 chickens by his family when he turned nine and, instead of just raising them on the farm, he has done much more than that.
The huge, free-range eggs provided by his chickens – now totalling 26 – are sold for a small fee at his school to teachers and the wider community at his parents’ business.
Not only does he collect the eggs, he also feeds and tends to the chickens, which are kept at his grandfather’s farm.
“My favourite is Holly,” he said. Hamish’s eggs have become quite popular in town, with a waiting list required just before Christmas.
“It’s mostly his teachers that snap them up quick, but when we have them in the shop, people just love them,” Hamish’s mother Louise Johnstone said. “It’s been a good little hobby for him … he buys all of their food himself too.”
