Selectors made the decision to give most of their usual senior players a break to avoid them being burned out. David Tiffin will come into the team as captain for the first time on Sunday when Leeton takes on West Wyalong.
It will also be the first time the Wolves have played a Creet Cup match this season after Griffith forfeited their match last year and the game against Ardlethan-Barellan was deemed a bye when that association pulled out of the competition.
The match against West Wyalong will take place at Mark Taylor Oval on Sunday, with Tiffin hopeful of securing a maiden win at the helm.
“While we’ve rested some of those senior players, we’ve still got a really good mix of youth and experience,” he said. “A few of them also played West Wyalong (on December 18) when Leeton beat them in O’Farrell Cup.
“We’ve got some really good all-rounders in Hugh (Collins), Steve Campbell has been playing well, Matt Dedini and ‘Wecko’ (Steve Weckert).
“They are probably our four all-rounders that will all have a job to do. We know West Wyalong are probably going to bring over a strong side.”
Leeton made the final of Creet Cup final last year, but went down to Lake Cargelligo. Tiffin said the key to victory would be batting out the overs and getting big runs on the board.
“We’ll have to do well in the field too,” he said. “I haven’t played at Mark Taylor this year, but the outfield is always pretty slow, so we’ll have to be working hard for our runs.”
As it will be Tiffin’s first time at the helm, he was confident he would have the support to back him up.
“Being an opener (if Leeton bat first) or if we field … either way I’m out there at the start of the game, so there won’t be time to have that nervous energy,” he said. “I know some of the guys will be offering their help too.”
