WITH a passion for helping others and staying out of the spotlight, Don Edenborough had no choice but to shine when he was named the Citizen of the Year on Thursday.

Mr Edenborough was stunned when his named was called out for the coveted crown during Thursday’s Australia Day Leeton awards.
“Oh my God, I can’t believe it,” he said.
“Never in a million years did I think I would get this.
“I will say thank you to those that nominated me.
“I feel as though there is one person who should be up here … that certain person has supported me for the last 15 or 16 years.
“Thank you very, very much Tanya (Lewis). You should be up here.
“I dedicate this to mum and dad.”
Mr Edenborough was recognised for his contribution and dedication to the Leeton community.
He has had a daily involvement with the Meals on Wheels program for the past 16 years, as well as volunteering his time with organisations such as BapistCare and Leeton’s Uniting Church. Taking out the junior citizen of the year honour was Jack Martin, who has been a high achiever in the arts and cultural community.
He spends many hours a week attending lessons and honing his skills and is well-liked among his peers. Last year Jack was elected vice-captain.
“I was surprised,” Jack said.
“I’m really happy about it. It's another opportunity for the arts to be put out there. I love performing and I hope this encourages others to get out there.”
Sally Doig took out the achiever of the year honour for her many years of hard work with the Leeton SunRice Festival, Leeton Preschool and Leeton Hockey Association.
“We have so many great organisations in our town to be part of … I urge all of you to think about joining and helping out,” she said.
Tess Staines was announced as young achiever of the year, while the Leeton SunRice Festival took out event of the year, the Bidgee Classic was named group of the year and organisation of the year went to the Whitton Community Hall committee. Frances Tsoukalidis was named lifelong citizen to the shire and was overwhelmed on the day.
