Tara Cook is participating in the World’s Greatest Shave on March 17 and is seeking the support of the community when it comes to chipping in for the cause.
The World’s Greatest Shave is held every year in March to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Miss Cook decided to take part in the shave for a reason that hit close to home.
“I have a lot to do with the Ronald McDonald House as my son has special needs,” she said.
“While the greatest shave doesn’t have anything to do with the Ronald McDonald House, it did give me the idea of doing something to help others.
“I haven’t had a lot to do with anyone that has had blood cancer, but there are certainly many people out there that are affected, so I wanted to help.”
Miss Cook originally set her sights on raising a small amount, but has already eclipsed that total.
“My first goal was to raise $250 and I’ve already beaten that,” she said.
“I changed it to $500 and (as of late last week) I was already getting close.
“It’s mostly been family and friends donating at the moment, but I would certainly love any donations from the community … it doesn’t have to be much.
“Every dollar helps in these cases I think.”
For every $250 raised, it is enough to enable a family to attend a support program specific to their blood cancer.
For $500, a regional family is able to stay cost-free in accommodation close to treatment in the city for one week.
Miss Cook said she wasn’t worried about shaving her hair off.
“It’s definitely going to be less maintenance, which I think is great,” she said.
“I’m actually full blown excited about doing it … I’m not worried at all.
“It’s just hair and it will grow back. It’s just one of those things. If it can help someone then it’s all worth it and that’s exactly why I’m doing it.” The shave will take place in Jarrah Mall on March 17 at 12.30pm.
