Penny Davies has been employed as council’s new manager of library, culture and community services.
While it may seem like a mouthful, Ms Davies has already been sinking her teeth into the position.
She officially started late last year in the community services division, but thanks to her extensive background with libraries, museums, heritage, arts and local government, the role was expanded early this year.
“I’m so excited about it … I have a background in all of these areas and I love bringing the community together in the process of it all,” Ms Davies said.
The position will also include the Roxy Theatre – much to Ms Davies’ delight.
She hoped to expand programs throughout the areas under her control to include more engagement from residents at the library, in community events and at the theatre.
Ms Davies viewed libraries as still having a significant place in modern society.
“Libraries are no longer just for borrowing books or a place to house books,” she said.
“They are the only real community area that is left and one that engages people of all ages, especially in small towns.
“Yes you have your halls and different things, but at the library you can come and feel safe at all times, broaden your horizons, participate in programs and so much more.
“They are used by people of all ages.”
Ms Davies said her strengths and passions included building a strong and resilient community that would have the ability to move forward.
“There are so many wonderful projects that we will be doing,” she said.
One of those specific to the library will be a monthly “Sunday Soiree” that will have a different theme and performer each time, including poetry reading and more.
“We want to be doing things that appeal to all demographics,” Ms Davies said.
Ms Davies has a long history with libraries having worked at the State Library of South Australia, the Bega Valley Shire Library, Libraries ACT and more recently worked at Carrathool Shire Council in community development.
She started out as a school librarian and said all her experience meant she remained just as keen to bring her ideas to life in Leeton.
“I’ve enjoyed meeting members of the community and I can’t wait to meet even more,” she said.
“I’m loving it here and I’m looking forward to what is ahead and everything we will be doing.
“I’m excited to be working across all of these different areas because there is so much we can be doing.”
Ms Davies is also part of Western Riverina Arts.
One of the next major events at the library will be the launch of an exhibition from the State Library titled Satire in a Time of War from 12.30pm on March 4.
