It has been a long time coming and something police are also approving of.
Not only will it give motorists better viewing while driving, but hopefully it will drive down the incidents of crime in the shire.
That’s not to say crime in Leeton is on the up, but these incidents do happen and if better street lighting is a deterrent that so be it.
There’s also the environmental benefits by switching to LED lights and the costs council will surely make.
Moving in this direction is a step to towards the future for council.
Mayor Paul Maytom is very much for renewable energy and would like to see more of it in the shire.
Think that doesn’t really mean too much?
Take a look at America.
President Donald Trump is a climate change denier and would probably scoff at a project like this.
So by that instance, councillor Maytom is ahead of the curve.
There’s no point shying away from the climate change debate.
People out there obviously have very strong thoughts on whether or not it is real or just something scientists have come up with.
If you scratch beneath the surface, even the uneducated would agree climate change is at least “a thing”.
Sure temperatures have been rising and falling for years, but there’s no doubting Australia just had one of its weirdest summers on record.
It was hot throughout NSW, Victoria and Tasmania had significant and rainfall.
Not to mention Perth and Western Australia – usually one of the gauges for what sort of weather the east will have.
The west enjoyed a moderately milder summer than usual, which culminated in recent weeks with flooding.
Sure the sceptics will say this has been happening for centuries, but there has to be more to it.
It’s a relief to see council and other businesses and homes within Leeton shire looking to be responsible with their energy.
The sooner more projects get started the sooner everyone can benefit.
The street light upgrade isn’t solely for this purpose, but it will go a way in helping the environment and the shire.
