Saturday morning, riders began gathering at the Mia Function Centre to register for the day’s ride, a poker run that led the entrants around the Riverina in search of a winning hand.
The journey meandered through Merunda for Boree Creek, Narrandera and Barellan before returning to the Mia Function Centre at the end of the ride.
At each stop, a rider is given a playing card that formed a poker hand they would use to compete for a $300 jackpot at the end of the day.
The day’s winner Luke Burke was pleased to draw the winning hand and promptly donated the jackpot back to the CF fundraiser knowing every last cent is put to good use.
Fundraising organizer Colleen Willis was pleased to start the year off with such a successful fundraiser.
“We had a great turn out,” Mrs Willis said.
“We really would like to thank everybody in Leeton that supported us and all the businesses.
“We get so much support from Leeton, they always get behind us and any charity event.
“It’s an absolutely fantastic community.”
The poker run didn’t just draw from the local pool, riders from over 450 kilometers away rode into Leeton to show their support.
“We had people from the Blue Mountains, we had people from Finlay, it was a really good turnout and a spectacular day,” Mrs Willis said.
Raising funds to build a database that help doctors understand cystic fibrosis and track individualized treatments has a local touch for the group.
Three individuals that live in Leeton and Narrandera are diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and they committee understand the importance of working towards a cure.
The committee were pleased to see the turnout grow over the previous year’s poker run and hope to see an increase of support.
Mrs Willis said the feedback from the participants was positive.
“The response was fantastic,” she said.
“With the weather and everything it was absolutely brilliant.
“Everything went smoothly, tt was probably one of the best that we’ve ever done.”
The fundraiser is the first in their season and the committee have two more on the books.
On the 29th of April at Gogelderie Weir the group will hold a carp-a-thon, and on the 19th of May they plan on holding a Hypnosis Show at the Mia Function Centre.
