A $150,000 project has come to fruition at the Narrandera-Leeton Airport.
The initiative was funded by the state government and included upgrade works, with line markings still to come.
Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson was on hand on Friday to view and official open the upgraded area.
“The upgraded aviation parking will allow the airport to meet airplane parking demands and attract more charter flights to the Riverina region,” she said.
“(This will generate significant economic returns and increasing the number of jobs in the broader community.
“Since its establishment in the 1940s, the Narrandera-Leeton Airport has been essential in providing long-term viability and growth for the local economy, enabling tourists and important air services to access the local area.
“It is for this reason the NSW government has been very proud to invest $125,000 through the Restart NSW Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund into the upgrade of the airport, as the positive flow-on effects of expanding the airport will be felt across the region.”
The major construction works for this project, delivered by Narrandera Shire Council involved the widening and sealing of the general aviation parking area.
With the earthworks and sealing of the pavement completed in January, the major construction works are now finished.
Final project works including line marking, signage, drainage improvements and installation of tie down points are scheduled to be completed by the end of March.
Narrandera shire’s chief executive officer Judy Charlton was hopeful the upgrade work would lead to a boom in travel to the Leeton and Narrandera area.
“In addition to increased general aviation parking to attract more charter flights, the upgrade will also allow for more aviation training opportunities and open the region to increased business access, including agri-business and real estate, while maintaining regular Rex scheduled flights,” she said.
Narrandera and Leeton councils also contributed $25,000 each to the project.
“The improvements allow the Narrandera-Leeton Airport to receive other flights without affecting the regular passenger transport flight schedules as there is now ample room for several aircraft to park,” Ms Charlton said.
