Residents were asked a series of questions on the issue and responded with plenty of passion and thought.
Staff member Sue Parker felt it was important residents had their say.
“One of the biggest issues … is residents really love and enjoy visits from people,” she said.
“They stated even people they don’t know – interaction with the community is important to them.”
1 Why is it important families visit their loved ones in aged care facilities during the Easter break?
Marjory McCormack: Family visits are the salt of life. Family are my salvation, especially after entering the aged care facility.
Maisie Miller: It brings home the true meaning of Easter to me. Spending time with family is important this time of the year.
2 What do residents get out of these visits?
Jean Douglas: To know we are not forgotten.
Ella Stuart: We love to have visits, whether they are from our own family, other residents’ family, or visitors to the villa.
Thelma Dickinson: We love and enjoy people’s company and it passes time nicely.
Hazel Collins: Love and happiness.
3 How important is family interaction with their loved ones during these "holiday" periods?
Joan Kelleher: It means everything to me.
Joyce Piltz: You can catch up on family gossip.
Val Kelly: To be able to exchange love.
Marjory McCormack: I would love to see more of our younger generation visit, once they leave home or town they don’t seem to get back to visit us.
Maisie Miller: It brings family together.
4 Why would recommend these visits happen all of the time, not just during these periods?
Daphne Scaife: Because our time here at the villa feels the same to us all year through, so we always look forward to seeing our family. The staff make special occasions nice for us though, but it is always nice to spend time with family.
George Turner: I don’t think family should limit visits to special occasions because we need to be included and involved in our families lives all years through. Every day to us is a blessing and each day spent with family and friends is very important.
Eileen Halden: It gives me a purpose and to be able to look forward to knowing we are getting a visit.
Thema Dickinson: It makes us feel we are still important to others and cheers us up.
