A petition has been circling the town to gain support for a small water park to be constructed at McCaughey Park. The idea has reached the ears of Leeton Shire Council mayor Paul Maytom, who informally brought the topic up at last week’s ordinary meeting.
While he was merely making council aware of the petition, he said it was something he would raise at a formal level in the future. Calls for a small water park to be constructed started in summer.
Yanco residents have been without a pool for almost nine years after it was closed in 2009 due to safety, financial and other reasons. Councillor Maytom believed if the idea were to go ahead at McCaughey Park it would be a “jewel in the crown” for Yanco.
“It’s very early days, but we certainly want to explore it,” he said.
“I think we could do something at a basic model. I think back to before Leeton had a skate park and the idea of that went around and round and we always thought it would be too difficult. Eventually that did happen and now look how great that it and what is does for people in our town and visitors. I think something like this is a wishlist-type thing, but as I say, it’s certainly something we should be considering.”
Cr Maytom emphasised to councillors the petition “wasn’t having a go”, but was simply exploring the idea and whether it would be supported. “McCaughey Park is already one of the best parks in our shire,” he said.
