That was the sentiment of new Rotary Club of Leeton president Monique Owen, who officially stepped into the position on Saturday night at the club’s changeover dinner.
Mrs Owen wants the community to think of Rotary as being open to all, but also a group that does more than just standing around a barbecue.
“Rotary International would like to change that image and so would I,” she said. “I definitely think there are people in the community that would think holding a sausage sizzle is all Rotary does and that is far from being the case.”
The changeover dinner on Saturday included the induction of Leeton’s George Weston as district governor, as well as more than $68,000 being distributed back into the community.
The theme for Rotary this year is to “make a difference” and that’s what Mrs Owen planned to do. She also wanted to focus on youth development, a cohesive club, membership and more.
Mrs Owen attended the Rotary Club of Hall’s changeover dinner in Canberra this week where Leeton received $13,000 from the organisation to be used for an upgrade of Graham Park. Each year the club selects a town that has stallholders support its makers market and Leeton was the latest recipient. Rotary Club of Leeton is contributing $8000.
