Mrs Wilesmith was born and raised in Leeton, attending Leeton Public School, Leeton High School and the Leeton Technical College.
She’s known by many around town for her community involvement, particularly with sporting organisations, as well as her sunny and friendly demeanour at the Leeton High School front office.
Life has changed over the years for Mrs Wilesmith, who remembered growing up in Leeton to be full of adventures.
“I lived in a neighbourhood with kids around my own age so we always had friends and rode our bikes everywhere.
Our families socialised regularly and we spent plenty of time out the river with Dad.
As we got older ‘going to the pictures’ at the Roxy and blue light discos were our entertainment.”
On leaving school, Mrs Wilesmith wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do and decided to complete a secretarial studies Cert II course at Leeton Technical College before working at Letona.
She also worked with the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia and has been employed in the Leeton High School front office since 2001.
“It’s a fantastic job and I enjoy dealing with the students,” Mrs Wilesmith said. “I am lucky to work with some really great people.”
Mrs Wilesmith met her husband Garry in 1990 when he was playing for the Leeton Greens after moving to town from Albury.
They were married on February 26, 1994 on what was the “hottest day of the year”.
The pair have two children Rhys and Morgan.
“I am so proud of both of them,” Mrs Wilesmith said.
Over the years Mrs Wilesmith has worked tirelessly on a number of committees, including the Leeton Basketball Association (secretary), the Greens women’s auxiliary as president and secretary and she has been the Greens registrar and secretary.
Add to that more than a host of roles with the Leeton Junior Rugby League Club, the Leeton Public School fete, the St Peter’s Op shop and fete and one’s head is in a spin with what she has done for the community.
Mrs Wilesmith said living in Leeton was unique and she couldn’t picture a life anywhere else.
“Leeton has been a fantastic place to raise our boys,” she said.
“They have always been into sports and we have supported them in anything they have wanted to try or do – as do most families in this town.
“We have great schools, which give families a choice of where their children are educated.
“Awesome facilities like our town pool, ovals, indoor stadium.
“Living in a small community like Leeton you know just about everyone so they look out for your kids and help each other out when in need.
“Leeton is a very generous community and looks after its own and others in times of need.
“Leeton is very unique and I love living in Leeton and I don’t think we could have had a better place to raise our family.”
