Leeton’s women’s sevens side was able to secure the minor premiership with a 27-10 victory over Wagga City and earned themselves a week off as a result.
Dianas coach Andrew Reilly labelled the game as one of their best this season.
“We had a great win,” Reilly said.
“It was a very tough match, despite what the scoreline might suggest.
“The girls are really peaking at the right time of the year … I would say it’s probably the best game we’ve played this season.”
The Dianas were able to put everything they have been working on at training into practice on Saturday at No. 1 Oval.
This included retaining possession of the ball and and making sure they were doing all of the little things right on the field.
Aimee Spowart, Georgia Wallace and Amie Fazekas were among the side’s best players on the day, but Reilly felt everyone had given their all.
“It really was a team effort from all of the girls,” he said.
“Everyone worked hard.”
The Dianas will continue with their training regime in preparation for their first finals match at home on August 12.
“We trained Tuesday night and we’ll train again Thursday night,” Reilly said.
“It will be all about stepping up our intensity (over the next fortnight).
“We’ll be working on our fitness and just making sure all the parts of our game are working together.”
The Dianas lost just one match during the home and away season.
“It’s been a very good season so far,” Reilly said.
“I think the thing I’m most proud of is the introduction of rugby to a number of new girls and seeing them adapt and learn the game.
“It all bodes very well for the future.”
The Dianas will also held to Wagga this weekend to support the Phantoms second grade team.
That side will face the Waratahs in the qualifying final at the Conolly Rugby Complex in Wagga.
Second grade finished third on the ladder behind the Waratahs and Wagga City. Their match on Saturday will get underway from 12.10pm.
