A report is being prepared for the Coroner following Wednesday afternoon’s crash, which occurred just before 2pm on the Sturt Highway at Sandigo.
Police said a Scania articulated vehicle carrying a load of eggs, was travelling in a south easterly direction when the accident occurred.
Officers investigating the incident have been told by witnesses the truck veered to the incorrect side of the highway before it left the road, travelled for 100 metres, before it struck several large trees and a fence.
The driver, believed to be a 48-year-old man from Sydney, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was trapped in the wreckage.
Passing motorists contacted emergency services who attended a short time later, including a rescue helicopter, which landed on the highway.
However, the driver could not be revived.
Police from Griffith Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.
“The deceased man was from the Sydney area and his family have been notified,” Inspector Nick Seddon said.
“We would remind all road users to take care when travelling through the area.”
Traffic alerts were issued and the Sturt Highway was closed for several hours while police investigated the crash and the heavy vehicle was removed.
Police have called on any other witnesses from the accident to come forward and assist with their investigations.
The news has shocked the Narrandera and MIA area, who have sadly experienced several fatal accidents this year, including two separate incidents outside of Whitton.
Two truck drivers were killed at the beginning of the year when their vehicles collided and burst into flames near the Mount Harris Road intersection.
That area of road required heavy patching as a result of the incident and tributes flowed for the two men who tragically died at the scene.
A Griffith man was killed on Wilga Road near Whitton in May and a 52-year-old woman died after a nightmare collision at Gillenbah in April.
Two others were injured as a result of the accident.
