Leeton will return to No. 1 Oval on Sunday in what will be a huge test against the Mallee Men.
Lose and their season will likely be over, but win and there is every chance of making this year’s finals.
The Mallee Men went down last weekend as did the Greens, which boosted Leeton’s hopes of scraping into the top five.
However, coach Brent Pike was wary of the West Wyalong team, knowing they too would be hungry for a victory.
“It’s a massive game,” Pike said.
“We thought they won last week, so when we realised they hadn’t, the boys were all up and about again (after losing to TLU).
“The mood at training was good. Everyone is keen to go again and get a win.”
The Greens have spent their last five or six matches fighting to keep their season alive.
They remain in seventh position on equal points with Yenda in sixth and Yanco-Wamoon in eighth.
If the Greens can pull together a win over the Mallee Men followed by another next weekend against Yenda they will have given themselves a fighting chance.
The Greens may have to do it without one of their key personnel this weekend in Dan Patu.
Patu had teeth pushed back and knocked out about a month ago in a game and he suffered the same fate in last week’s game.
“He’s been advised not to play, but we’re leaving the decision up to him,” Pike said.
“He’ll be a big hole to fill if we have to.
“Other than that it will be a pretty similar side to last week.
“We’ll need a big performance from all of the boys.”
With West Wyalong known to have a vocal supporters base, Pike was hopeful the Leeton crowd would head down to No. 1 Oval and cheer them on. It would give us a push that’s for sure,” he said.
