The under 15s girls Aussie Rules team took out the Giants Cup at Blacktown last week. Ten schools represented each zone of NSW, with St Francis winning their pool and going through to the grand final.
They defeated Thomas Hassall Anglican College, MacKillop College Bathurst and Wollongong High School.
The grand final was against St Pius from Newcastle. St Pius jumped out of the blocks to kick the first goal in the first minute of the game. Grace Clancy had the job of containing St Pius running machine.
Abby Favell was massive in the final as she willed herself to contest-after-contest. Mikayla Jones returned from injury and produced an inspired performance, kicking two goals after busting through the oppositions defenses.
Mary Coelli produced her best performance and was cool under pressure. Tyler McKellar played well around the ground, while Eilish Morden and Laura Iannelli worked hard.
Ruby Henley and Grace Tooth played their roles well, making sure we moved the ball to our forwards. The back six led by Sigrid McLaughlin worked tirelessly, taking intercept marks and clearing the ball to our midfielders.
Maggie Maguire continued her fine form throughout the day.
With two minutes to go scores were close, with SFC leading by a point.
Leah Dore moved the ball to Mikayla Jones who evaded a few tacklers, straightened and kicked.
The ball looked for all money to be sailing through the big sticks until the wind grabbed it late and it rocketed into the goal post.
St Francis were two points clear with 1.30 on the clock.
St Pius moved the ball quickly and kicked into the forward line, a big pack formed, a fantastic mark was taken by a St Pius forward.
She went back with 47 seconds on the clock, 20-metres, out directly in front.
She ran in deliberately, the ball left the boot and it was floating in the air, the wind grabbed it and pushed it to the right for a minor score. Sigrid held the ball for the final 10 seconds until the siren sounded and St Francis were the state champions.
