At the top of mayor Paul Maytom’s list was the Western Riverina Intermodel Freight Terminal (WRIFT) at Wumbulgal.
Councillor Maytom along with other stakeholders met with the Minister for Transport at the location to discuss the facility and the opportunity for state government funding to be injected.
“There is around $500 million the state government has allocated for regional infrastructure projects and we certainly think some of that should be going to the WRIFT,” he said. “The opportunities are vast and the benefits for both Leeton shire and Griffith are great.
“We’re hopeful by having shown them around that facility they too will think that, so when it comes time to apply they will remember being there and can picture what we want to achieve there.”
Ministers attended various functions in the MIA, with a community dinner also held in Leeton. Cr Maytom had the opportunity to speak with Premier Gladys Berejiklian on various issues.
“She was pleased to hear we didn’t ‘qualify’ for any amalgamations … we had a general discussion on Leeton and the opportunities and issues we are facing,” he said.
The upgrade of the Leeton pool was also on the agenda, with council hoping to apply for state funding for that initiative at a later date. The Leeton Chamber of Commerce and Industry was also present at the community dinner, with president Jodie Ryan taking the time to chat with various ministers.
“The minister for small business was asking about our empty shopfronts and had some suggestions … he said it’s the same everywhere, but we are working on it,” she said.
“I thought it was a very good opportunity to have those people all under the one roof in a relaxed atmosphere.” The chamber will hold an event on September 21 to encourage more businesses to take up membership.
