Mrs Kirkup was one of two Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) members to be awarded honorary councillor status recently.
Along with Warren Lang, Mrs Kirkup, who resides in Leeton shire, has many achievements to her name.
She was honoured for her many roles and contribution to the rice industry and the irrigated agriculture sector.
Mrs Kurkup and her husband Barry own a successful irrigation enterprise.
Her association with the rice industry started many years ago when she began working for SunRice early in her professional career, serving the organisation for 18 years in various roles.
Mrs Kirkup has also been a member of the Yanco branch of RGA in a number of roles for more than 20 years.
This included eight years as the branch secretary and 10 years as a central executive delegate.
She transitioned her knowledge and experience into governance roles, currently severing the rice and irrigation industries as a member of the Rice Marketing Board, director of SunRice and retired as chairwoman of Murrumbidgee Irrigation in 2012.
Mrs Kirkup is also passionate about promoting women in the rice industry.
RGA president Jeremy Morton was pleased to recognise both Mr Lang and Mrs Kirkup for their service and dedication to the rice industry and their communities.
“Warren and Gillian are great leaders and role models in the rice industry who both encourage youth and women to get involved in our vibrant industry,” he said.
Mr Lang was recognised for his involvement with the RGA for 24 years, including 12 years as the former RGA Berriquin branch president.
Mr Lang and his wife Alison also operate a successful irrigation farming enterprise and a bulk transport business in the Finley area.
