Earlier this year it was decided to bring back the town’s Art Deco Festival in the hopes of revitalizing Leeton’s heritage and history, while at the same time giving tourists and visitors an event to whet their appetite in those areas.
Leeton Shire Council’s events and performing arts co-ordinator Alison Egan is in the process of planning what is set to be an interesting and fun festival for all.
Mrs Egan headed to New Zealand earlier this year to be part of the Napier’s art deco event and was able to take away plenty of tricks and tips.
Since then she said the support from the Leeton shire community had been second-to-none.
“We had a great response from the community when we called for an Art Deco Festival committee a couple of months ago … the next step for us now will be to identify a date and time that suits everyone for us to begin monthly meetings and get the planning for a 2019 festival,” Mrs Egan said.
The event has already been flagged with the new Destination Network, who are eager to support the event.
“Some potential funding opportunities have also been identified which will be further explored in 2018.”
Council is now considering possible dates for the 2019 festival.
“Unlike many of our current festivals and events that target friends and family returning to the region, the Art Deco festival, through its advertising and promotion, will purposely target art deco and architecture enthusiasts and other niche markets,” Mrs Egan said.
“It’s anticipated these visitors will travel to the region specifically for this event and so will be more likely to utilize local accommodation, restaurants, local facilities.
“If managed correctly, this festival really should provide opportunities for the entire community to benefit from.”
It’s also not too late to get involved.
If any residents have any ideas they’d like to share or, if they are still considering joining the committee, contact Mrs Egan at council.
