The Yanco community recently presented Leeton Shire Council with a petition calling for a small water feature to be installed at McCaughey Park.
The idea was to have something for residents of all ages to access when it’s hot instead of having to travel to the Leeton pool.
The community wasn’t asking for a huge feature and called on council to investigate what options would be available.
The matter will be going back to council’s ordinary monthly meeting on Wednesday night with two options to be presented.
The first is for a “non-reticulated water delivery system” that would discharge the water back into the McCaughey Park pond.
The second option is for a pumped, reticulated and sanitized water delivery system.
The first option is the most “cost effective” for council, with the latter expected to be in the ball park of around $100,000.
The non-reticulated system would be between $45,000 to $50,000 and would comprise of a concrete slab of eight metres by eight metres with three water spouts of varying size.
Water would be delivered from the water main in Hebden Street.
If council decides to go ahead with the project the recommendation is they proceed with the cheapest option.
However, they do still need to decide if they want to go ahead with the idea at all.
When the community was calling on council to provide them with something to cool off with, resident Fran Porter said it was essential.
“We don’t want something worth $300,000 … that’s ridiculous,” Mrs Porter said.
“We just want something so the kids can cool off. They swim in the ‘lake’ at the park and in the channels.
“There’s no pool anymore, they closed that down, so we need something that is safe and for everyone. Our children have no where to go, no public transport (to Leeton). That’s why I’m fighting for it.”
The preferred option would have enough room and water delivered for many to enjoy at the one time.
Security cameras would also be included. The three proposed water spouts would used about 150 litres of water per minute. Council will vote on the matter on Wednesday night.
