The Crows defeated Collingullie-Glenfield Park 41-37 in what was a tough, physical and hard-fought match.
It was Leeton-Whitton who showed off their skill and team work throughout the game having good in with a succinct plan of how they would tackle their opposition.
Some positional changes going into the match had Grace Korovata take on a defensive role instead of her usual spot in the goal circle.
Her height helped put huge defensive pressure on Collingullie’s shooters, while at the opposite end Leeton-Whitton’s players made it count in the goal circle.
The Crows’ centre court also played their role and it led to a well-rounded team effort to bring home the premiership.
Co-coaches Libby Gillespie and Caryn Deaton were extremely proud of the effort put in by the team on the court on Saturday. Gillespie said the side had set a goal at the start of the season to win the premiership.
“I think we knew we had a premiership team in us with our A grade and A reserve teams,” Gillespie said.
“Unfortunately for A grade it didn’t go that way this year, but A reserve really stepped up and were able to bring it home.
“It was such a good feeling on Saturday. The girls were all very excited and happy to have won. It’s certainly a great way to finish off the season.”
Gillespie said the team also worked on having a “busy bench” on Saturday, which allowed them to have fresh legs whenever they were needed.
This worked in Leeton-Whitton’s favour as each player knew the role they had to play and how to work in unison with their team mates. With a huge Crows crowd cheering them on, they were able to get the job done.
Korovata added to her already impressive list of achievements so far for this season by being named as best on court for the game.
This capped off winning the league best and fairest for A reserve, as well as an impressive school representative career in 2017. Leeton-Whitton’s C grade side also played in Saturday’s grand finals, but went down by two goals. A full report will appear in Friday’s Irrigator.
