It has been many years since an election was so hotly contested and, with various mud slinging and smear campaigns circulating, it has meant residents have plenty of information to decipher.
The candidates contesting the seat are Austin Evans (Nationals), Helen Dalton (Shooters, Fishers and Farmers), Michael Kidd (Country Labor), Brian Mills (independent), Ray Goodlass (Greens) and Peter Robinson (independent).
Mr Evans is working to secure votes based on his party’s track record, as well as promising to secure better results for health, water and education areas in the electorate.
Mrs Dalton believes her party should secure the vote based on “years of neglect” from the Nationals. She wants to provide more funding across the board for key areas and issues, as well as offering fresh face to the political mix.
Mr Kidd wants to see more services return to health across the region, including maternity at Leeton District Hospital.
He has also spoken out against TAFE cuts and wants more funding directed to that portfolio.
For Mr Mills, an election campaign veteran, disbanding the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, banning what he says is cancerous orange concentrate in hospitals and Meals on Wheels products and standing up for citrus growers are all of his top priorities.
Mr Goodlass has put water security at the forefront of his campaign and he wants equitable shares of public services for regional areas, particularly for education, health and public transport.
The other independent in the race, Mr Robinson, would like to see a new medical school established in the electorate and he wants to see more research on how the Murray-Darling Basin Plant operates in South Australia.
Polling booths will be open throughout Leeton from 8am to 6pm tomorrow.
