NBN issued a statement regarding the release of the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman’s (TIO) 2016/17 Annual Report, addressing concerns over the number of complaints received about the network, and assure consumers that they are taking their issues seriously.
“We acknowledge that the increase in complaints to the TIO about services delivered over the nbn™ access network in the 2016/17 financial year demonstrates the necessity and importance of an industry-wide effort to ensure improved customer experiences as we reach the peak years of the build,” the statement said.
However despite their reassurances, the number of people experiencing issues with the NBN have created an atmosphere of distrust in the network, and Leeton resident Cindy Blackett speaks about her unwillingness to go to a service reviewed as unreliable.
“We are able to connect, we live in the town circle. However my delay in connecting to the NBN has been the mixed reviews from everyone else, and I’m really concerned I’ll be getting a lesser service than what we get now.”
Despite the negative response, nbn™ say there has actually been a decrease in overall complaints about landline and internet services, which they believe “is an early sign of movement in the right direction.”
Sarah Rook works for ACN as a service provider in Leeton, and addresses people’s concerns over internet speed saying while there may be some problems with the NBN itself, people also need to ‘do their homework’ first.
“Speaking to people around Leeton, the main concern for people is the unknown, and there is a lot of complaints about the less speed and people saying slow internet,” Sarah said.

“There are a few issues with the NBN especially when it comes to the towers, the further you are away from the tower the strength is weaker. Personally, I think there is an issue with the towers, and I they need more of them especially around Leeton and for those further out.”
She warns people not to jump into contracts with service providers offering unlimited data at cheap prices, because the speed will generally be a lot slower, and says opting for a plan with higher speeds at capped data usage is the better option.
